Lyubа Sautina
I was born in Siberia (Russia), currently living in Espoo. My projects appeal to the themes of relationship between traditional culture and the contemporary context, as well as representations of motherhood and childhood in culture and art. I work with methods of expressing human identity through cultural codes and also investigate the possibility of transforming traditional established practices and integrating them into the modern context. I view motherhood and childhood as fragile constructs that intertwine natural and cultural elements. By examining everyday practices and actions that lose their significance due to repetitive functionality, I extract them from their familiar context, thereby enriching them with new meanings or pushing them to absurdity. I study traditional handicraft techniques such as gold embroidery, pearl embroidery, and hand weaving. Additionally, in my projects, I utilize various media including video, audio, performance, and textile objects.
