Sofia Stupenkova

I have a passion for working with both documentary and fictional material, and my works focus on exploring themes of broken communication, absurdism, and the human obsession to be seen and heard. Originally from Moscow, I decided to leave my home country in March 2022 after its authorities launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Throughout my life, I have dedicated myself to the visual arts and achieved success through various exhibitions. In 2019 I joined the acting laboratory at the Moscow School of New Cinema. I continued my education in October 2020 by joining a two-year laboratory of stage direction and acting. During that time, I directed a documentary theater production "Gentle Guys." The production explored themes of male sensitivity, fragility, and fear of being rejected. By exploring the negative effects of patriarchal rules on men, the production was promoting more inclusive and equitable approaches to gender. Following my immigration, I contemplated what I could offer in these new circumstances. I was drawn to the thoughts about the ongoing war. This led me to gather dreams anonymously from people in Ukraine and Russia. This idea sparked my project "Anonymous Dreams," which led to several performances in Georgia and Barcelona.
