About PUBLICS

PUBLICS is a curatorial agency with a dedicated library, exhibition space, event space and reading room in Vallila Helsinki. Under the artistic direction of curator Paul O’Neill and with program manager Annabelle Antas, PUBLICS explores a “work together” institutional model with multiple overlapping objectives, thematic strands and collaborations.

PUBLICS is a constellation of practices, projects and productions. As such, PUBLICS proposes the term “Public” as always plural—as a concept; as a group of people (imagined, actualized or real); and as a contested spatio-temporal location/discourse in the world. The on-going project strands of PUBLICS are: The Centre for Curatorial Thinking; PUBLICS Library; PUBLICS Talks, Events and Performances; PUBLICS YOUTH, PUBLICS Parahosting and SHAPE Helsinki Art Map. These initiatives will evolve in time and in parallel with the project’s longer-term curatorial programmes, PUBLICS Public Art Commissions.

About the Exhibition

Co-curated by AA Bronson and Gareth Long, this exhibition unpacks the intertwined history of General Idea’s publishing practice and Art Metropole, the world’s oldest artist-run centre dedicated to artists’ books and media. Featuring archival materials and films from 1977–85, the exhibition design also incorporates Gareth Long’s installation artwork, creating a contemplative and interactive space in PUBLICS Library.
