Open Calls, Auditions and Spaces
Place: Cable Factory, Zodiak Studio C4, Tallberginkatu 1, 00180 Helsinki (inner yard, stair/door C, 4th floor).
Time: 8.3. 22, 16:00 – 17:30
After event performance: Funny Things Before Panic, 19:00
On 8.3. 2022, Globe Art Point in collaboration with the Cultural Centre Caisa, New Theatre Helsinki and Zodiak Center for New Dance is organising a panel discussion reflecting on the current situation in the performing field in Finland. During the discussion, we will touch upon:
- The lack of open auditions and open calls in the field. How does one get into the field when the open positions are often shared word to mouth which results in the same group of people being repeatedly hired?
- The inability of professionals to find premises for their practice. Inclusiveness of the field. What are the true challenges of opening the field to become more participatory? Loss of control? Less quality? What?
- Diversity of the field and more.
Presenting panellists:
- Angela Aldebs– Freelance Dancer
- David Kozma– Artistic Director at New Theatre Helsinki
- Harri Kuorelahti– Artistic Director at Zodiak
- Paiju Tyrväinen– Head of Division at City of Helsinki
- Moderated by Cátia Suomalainen Pedrosa, Director of Caisa
After the discussion we will have an audience Q&A starting at 17:00. We would like to encourage all of our participants to wear a face mask. Let’s protect each other!

Funny Things Before Panic is a coping mechanism dressed up as a musical. Three dancers embody three true stabbing stories that have happened around the choreographer, Liina Magnea.
Heidi Finnberg plays as Liina’s mother who got stabbed by a gang-member in the 80s, Reetta Nummi is Helga, the friend who got stabbed to death by her 16-year-old son and Liina is the teenage boy who got into a knife fight on a beautiful summer day.
In hopes of finding a way to emotionally cope with the situation, the performers compulsively sing songs and dance, retelling the traumatic events. This ultimately leads them to panic – a physical state riddled with tics, cramps and sounds that they have experienced in their personal lives. To distance themselves from the drama of a panic attack, they transform the symptoms into new dances and songs.
By turning the knife around they realise that these stories illustrate their internal self stabbing. The conclusion is an ode to the absurd and one’s own incapability to grasp injustice in the world.
The work does not literally represent or re-enact the acts of violence.
